My name is Matti Martinez. I am a 20 year old artist and writer, and I have been telling stories through my work for about 15 years now. Throughout my life, I was nervous to pursue art as anything more than a hobby. While there is nothing wrong with a hobby, I always had the desire to pursue art further, but no matter how much creating art meant to me, I believed pursuing it to be a risk too great to take. As I grow older and mature, however, I realize that the only way I can be certain my passion will never go anywhere is if I never go anywhere. Anything I love is worthwhile, and that includes my passion for creation.

What does Deep ellum mean to me?
As somebody who was raised in rural area over an hour away from Dallas, Deep Ellum has always been a place that I, as a young artist, admired from afar. Every rare chance I got to visit was like a trip for me. It is always incredibly meaningful, even if for a brief moment, to be surrounded by a community of like-minded people who value the arts as much as I do, and the fleeting time makes it all the more precious to me.
