Hugh earned BFA from Kansas City Art Institute with Major in Design with minor in Sculpture and Printmaking He studied graphic design under Victor Papanek one of the twentieth century's most influential pioneers of social and ecological design. His key work, Design for the Real World, remains the most widely read book about design ever published. Hugh also apprenticed with Dale Eldred, internationally acclaimed sculptor renowned for large-scale sculptures that emphasized both natural and generated light. He opened his fine art studio in May 2022 at Goldmark Cultural Center and began a full-time fine art career as an emerging artist in 2025.
