Whether visual art, music, film or wordplay, J.W. Fesken has been creating work since childhood. Born and raised in Jersey City ,NJ he would become immersed in this diverse, concrete landscape within the shadow of Manhattan. The many cultures that surrounded him would provide the raw inspiration for his budding artistic inclinations. In the decades that passed he would obtain a BFA, spend several years traveling in a van as a touring musician, participate in film festivals, gallery showings and work as a freelance artist in the film and fashion world of NYC all while further developing the application of his unique craft. In the mid 2000’s, Fesken, his wife and their pack of dogs left the east coast to move from city to city in search of further adventure. In 2014 they settled in New Orleans,LA where they currently reside with their four dogs. Fesken creates three dimensional, theatrical constructions with an emphasis on his self taught drawing, sculpture and painting techniques. Emotional and provocative, his fantastical shadow box dioramas reflect a realm in which the joys and challenges of the human condition are revealed within his miniature creations which reside within their own ecosystems adorned in his meticulously detailed aesthetic stylings. The narratives are further enhanced with the addition of his reverse glass paintings on cropped, antique windows. Fesken is a full time, award winning, working artist. He travels the country showing at art festivals and galleries while having his work featured in many eclectic boutiques and specialty shops. When not working he enjoys collecting vintage toys, recording music with the American Watercolor Movement and spending quality time with his beloved Cecily and the pups. Fun fact: He once charmed a cobra in Northern Africa.

What does Deep ellum mean to me?

Well, Deep Ellum has been in my heart since the early 2000's, having first visited to perform with a music group at a DIY performance space/indoor skatepark. Wild times for sure. From then on it's been on my radar, performing in town several times in the following years. When I started doing art festivals the Deep Ellum art fest quickly became a staple in my yearly art tours. whenever passing through with friends or family we always stop in town for a bite and check out "the big eye" before we split. I've always enjoyed the neighborhood's eclectic scene however it's the people that make a community special and I've met some magical folks there, some have even become friends and collectors of my work.
