While stuck on an airport tarmac, I pondered what art might look like if I ripped up the airline magazine and used the torn pieces as a color palate. A few weeks later I tested the idea, creating my first collage art piece; it sold not long after. I have continued to perfect the art of tearing and cutting pieces of recycled magazines and using them to create imagery that often looks like paint. My materials are recycled magazines and junk mail — mostly ripped and only occasionally cut — as well as glue and varnish; my rule of thumb is to only use shapes and images that do not resemble the feature I am creating. So, I don’t use eyes for eyes nor mouths for mouths, etc. Only when people step close do they discover and appreciate that the piece is made up entirely of shapes and images which combine to create an illusion. The end result is a striking 2-dimensional art piece which depicts a whole image from a distance, but reveals multiple hidden when up close and personal.
