New Orleans, Louisiana
JOSE FERNANDES is a professional documentary photographer and long time resident of New Orleans since 1987. In partnership with wife, artist Cecelia Fernandes, native New Orleanian, they opened a gallery on Royal Street dedicated exclusively to his work and their collaborations. This collection of work focuses on the culturally relevant events of Hurricane Katrina, Fats Domino funeral, and the most iconic second line of all time, a two week celebration of Uncle Lionel Batiste’s life, plus images of many influential contemporary musicians and culture bearers like Kermit Ruffins, Monk Boudreaux, John Boutte and Walter Wolfman Washington. Our international work span several continents and countries such as Morocco, Turkey, Portugal, Romania, Cuba France, Spain, Italy among others. Our hand made, reclaimed wood framed pieces are a collaborative expression between the two artists where Cecelia interprets the frames to further the narratives of the images, creating a unique work that marries the photography with the history of New Orleans. No two pieces are the same.

What does Deep ellum mean to me?
As an European immigrant/African American couple we feel connected to Deep Ellum in the long history of intersectionality of our two cultures and in the rich musical legacy created by them. For us, New Orleans and Deep Ellum are kindred spirits and keepers of the soul of America. Having participated in 2 Deep Ellum editions, one with the old organization and last year with the new, I've experienced the unique nature of the neighborhood that with New Orleans make up a rare phenomena in the United States.
